Like many people, I had heard the story of the Noah and the Great Flood many times growing up. But it was not until I decided to transcribe the Bible, that the Holy Spirit took me so much deeper into God's mysteries...
I knew that in the story of Noah, it rained on earth for 40 days and nights. However, I had not known/understood that God literally sent rain from the heavens - like deep space - rain coming from outside the earth. A meteor shower of water… no pun intended. The power of such a “waterfall” would be catastrophic.
I hadn’t previously given enough respect to the verse:
The water overpowered the earth mightily… The water held power over the earth for 150 days. Genesis 7:19, 24
In the Bible, when something is poured out from heaven, it comes out of the “windows of heaven.”
...on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up and the windows of heaven were opened. Genesis 7:11
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the LORD of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. Malachi 3:10
Furthermore, the Bible tells us the “waters/fountains/face of the deep” are also outside of earth. This is initially established in Genesis 1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
The “waters of the deep” existed BEFORE God created the earth. And the ONLY time in the Bible when the rain came from the windows of heaven and the fountains of the deep are in the story of Noah. And when the rain finally did stop, it tells us God closed the windows and the fountains.
The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained. Genesis 8:2
When some scientists claim that even if it rained for 40 day & nights over the whole earth, the water still wouldn’t be enough to cover mountains… that argument is void because we were already told this rain had come from outside of earth and its atmosphere.
As further evidence of “heavenly rain”, scientists say that a giant meteor hit the earth and wiped out the dinosaurs some 66 million years ago in what’s called the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) extinction event. In geologic record, the K-Pg event is marked by layer of sediment with high levels of iridium which is abundant in objects from outer space.
The hard evidence:
At some point, the earth was covered with water
A sudden mass extinction event occurred that killed off 3/4 of plant life and animal species
High levels of iridium were found in the same sedimentary levels as the extinction event
There are craters that show something impacted the earth from outside our atmosphere
The theories / hypotheses:
“When” such event occurred
“What” that came from outside our atmosphere and impacted the earth - also note that if water was raining down from the heavens, logically space rocks and debris would get swept into the downpour
The scientific evidence points to the Great Flood event just as it is described in the historical records. For purposes of this post, we only touched on evidence to highlight the windows of heaven and the fountains of the deep.
I am in constant awe & wonder of His greatness and maintain a healthy dose of fear & respect for His powers.

Whenever I bring clouds over the earth, and the rainbow is seen in the cloud; I will remember my covenant which is between myself and you and every living creature of any kind; and the water (from heaven & the deep) will never again become a flood to destroy all living beings. The rainbow will be in the cloud; so that when I look at it, I will remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of any kind on the earth.” Genesis 9:14-16
